TikTok has banned the popular milk crate challenge' on its site due to fears that people who participate in the fad may be severely hurt. TikTok users were challenged to build a pyramid of milk crates and then climb over the shaky construct.
A spokesperson from the company told sources, "TikTok prohibits content that promotes or glorifies dangerous acts, and we remove videos and redirect searches to our Community Guidelines to discourage such content. We encourage everyone to exercise caution in their behavior whether online or off."
In most videos showing the trend, TikTok users can be seen falling to the ground while attempting to climb up one side and down the other of the homemade pyramids. The banning comes after many healthcare professionals expressed their worries about the trend and its risk to people who participate in it on social media.
Searching for the trend's hashtag #milkcratechallenge on the app now returns a "no results found" message. The search results page notifies users that "this phrase may be associated with behavior or content that violates our guidelines. Promoting a safe and positive experience is TikTok's top priority."
According to Dr. Shawn Anthony, an orthopedic physician in New York, "injuries may include broken wrists, shoulder dislocations, ACL and meniscus tears, as well as life-threatening conditions including spinal cord injuries."
Dr. Anthony reminds everyone that the country's emergency rooms are already overburdened due to the continuing pandemic. He also says that the issue "adds extra stress to our health system and health care professionals."
